Critical Role Campaign 4 Introduces the Fighters Party

Since the launch of Campaign 4, new Dungeon Master Brennan Lee Mulligan has kept viewers on edge with rich lore, a diverse cast of characters, and a gripping narrative including divine entities, evil spirits, and malevolent powers growing in power within the urban setting.

Note: Spoilers for the third episode of Campaign 4 are included.

The Soldiers Table Introduced

The third episode concluded with a major cliffhanger and revealed the first table of characters who will split off from the primary party to begin their separate journey, distinct from the other two tables.

The combat-focused team includes Teor (brought to life by the voice actor), Thimble (Laura), Tyranny (Whitney Moore), Wicander Halovar (the player), and the mysterious adventurer (the actor).

Why Split the Party?

Given a large ensemble, it was clear from the start that keeping everyone at a single group would be unfeasible.

Hence, the first four episodes of this story serve as an Overture, intertwining the personal journeys before splitting into three separate parties: Soldiers, Planners, and Explorers.

The Nature of the Warrior Group

Per the DM, the warrior group is for players who are drawn to a traditionally charged battle-oriented story mode where peaceful solutions are scarce.

At first glance, figures such as the hesitant healer the cleric might seem mismatched, but the developments of episode 3 make it clear why these specific adventurers are perfectly fit for the warrior group.

Reasons to Leave

To begin with, the team has a clear idea where to go next after a intense initial meeting with The Crow Keepers.

Casimir of Thjazi—whose demise started the story’s plot—manipulated the enemy for his personal gain, invading the hidden lair, striking the character, and swiping all the enchanted items to dispose of.

Casimir then cleared his liabilities and ran away to a secure base in Gormalay, Timmony, north of Dol-Makjar, with Cyd pursuing him.

Individual Reasons

Moreover, each adventurer has a individual motive to leave the city the urban setting:

  • The agile hero, as the close ally and trusted friend, desires revenge.
  • The knowledgeable figure knows Timmony and warns that it is a hostile place.
  • The strong character and The cleric, having disobeyed his house’s orders to kill the fighter and instead freed him, have no safe haven.
  • But, their reputation as key figures in the influential clan could help the group access locations they normally couldn’t.
  • Moreover, The fighter pledged a life debt to Wicander for his deliverance and will now go with him everywhere.

Pursued by Authorities

Finally, all of them are wanted by the rulers that govern the setting for a range of causes, making staying in the city too risky:

  • The agile adventurer and The hero are recognized lawbreakers.
  • The warrior and The cleric defied House Halovar and the legion of demons they are aligned with.
  • The target is marked for death by the family.

This leaves them little choice but to travel to the remote area in pursuit of the antagonist.

What’s Next?

According to episode three’s post-show segment, we learn that the Soldiers table will be absent in the upcoming installment, leaving the remaining eight cast members to assemble the Seekers and Planners parties.

Audiences can anticipate finding out which characters will be where in Campaign 4’s concluding setup installment, released on October 24.
