The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on Wednesday, representing the second rate cut this year during financial volatility stemming from the government closure and tariff policies.
Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve
The decision to reduce the benchmark interest rate by a 0.25% to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an extraordinary juncture for the central bank. The authority has been under immense pressure to lower borrowing costs despite ongoing price increases.
Central Bank Announcement Notes Labor Market Changes
In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had gone up but remains low. “Job gains have slowed,” the statement reads. “Inflation has moved up and stays somewhat elevated.”
Federal Closure Complicates Fed’s Job
The continuing government stoppage, now one of the longest in American history, has also hindered the Fed’s job. Collection of key financial statistics has been suspended without a timeline as employees at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are on leave during the closure.
Data Gap Impacts Policy Decisions
The Federal Reserve typically studies labor statistics to determine employment trends, including the number of employment gains created to the market and the current unemployment rate. The most recent employment data was released in the beginning of last month, before the closure, and provided a somewhat gloomy snapshot of the employment scene in the previous month.
The figure of jobs created to the market in August was down by more than 100,000 since the earlier season, and joblessness rose to four point three percent – the peak since 2021.
Alternative Reports Indicate Ongoing Slowdown
Though the bureau was set to release September’s job market report in early October, it suspended its release once the shutdown started. Employment data company a leading payroll processor reported recently that the business segment eliminated thirty-two thousand jobs in last month, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.
“Supply as well as demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair Jerome Powell said recently, a trend he had previously said stems from trade and immigration measures.
Inflation Report Shows Gradual Increase
Though the bureau’s employment data has been suspended, the agency still released its price statistics for September that indicated that costs are going up, although slowly. Costs increased three percent over the last year, the peak since the start of the year. In spring, the annual inflation rate was two point three percent, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
