Conservative responses to the partial release of files related to the Epstein case have been sharply divided, with some supporters of the previous administration highlighting the noticeable appearance of Bill Clinton and additional Democrats in images, while others expressed frustration over how extensive censorship cast Donald Trump and GOP members in a negative light.
Justice Department Justifies Censorship with Fervent Hyperbole
Administration officials justified the redactions with fervent hyperbole. “Never in U.S. the nation's history has a Commander-in-Chief or the Department of Justice been this open with the American people about such a sensitive law enforcement matter,” stated a senior Justice official Todd Blanche, who released a six-page memo outlining the censorship process.
Questions Raised by Redactions
While Trump's identity and likeness are visible in portions of the materials, the widespread redactions raise serious questions about what may be hidden behind them. Some conservative lawmakers swiftly demanded increased transparency.
“The public are raging and walking away,” posted Republican Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene.
Via a social media post, GOP Kentucky Thomas Massie said the censorship violate the statute, and implied that a future legislature may attempt to impeach the top law enforcement official, Pam Bondi, for that offense. “Regrettably, this file dump egregiously does not adhere to both the intent and the wording of the law,” he added.
Some Rightwing Commentators Rally Behind the Disclosure
But, a segment of rightwing commentators and former President allies swung firmly behind the administration.
The disclosed materials—originating from a DOJ run by close Trump associate Pam Bondi—contains scores of pages that are completely redacted, and numerous of the men shown in pictures have their faces obscured.
Yet some do not, including prominent individuals like Clinton, entertainer Michael Jackson, and academic Noam Chomsky. The inclusion of Clinton, especially, allowed certain conservative voices to go on the offensive.
“It’s pretty ironic how the political left wrongly claimed Donald Trump of associating with a pedophile, only for the administration's Justice Department to unveil documents that depict Bill Clinton skinny dipping with a pedophile,” wrote right-wing activist Laura Loomer.
“Recently released documents reveal Bill Clinton shirtless in a hot tub with a female that is not his wife Hillary Clinton,” posted lawyer Rogan O’Handley. “There’s only one explanation Epstein would take pictures of a US President with a girl in a hot tub: Leverage.”
Clinton Spokesperson Releases Response
Bill Clinton has consistently stated he was aware of zero criminal activity by Epstein and has not been alleged to have engaged in any misconduct. “The administration hasn’t been hiding these documents for months only to release them late on a weekend to protect Bill Clinton,” Clinton’s spokesperson Angel Ureña stated in a statement.
“The release is about shielding officials from future revelations, or from information they’ll try and hide permanently. Therefore they can release as many low-quality 20-plus-year-old photos as they desire, but this is not about Bill Clinton. Never has, never will be,” the response added.
Broader Rightwing Comment Seems Muted
Nonetheless, overall comment on the right was comparatively muted after the disclosure, particularly when compared with the vociferous demands for transparency that preceded the legislative approval to enact a bill requiring the files' publication.
The commentator, who recently secured media access at the Pentagon, had been one of the loudest proponents for a full disclosure. In February, she criticized the Justice Department broadly and Bondi in particular after a set of conservative influencers were provided physical folders of files that included little previously unseen information.
