Whenever a major honors show nears, one notices an outcry to include of new categories to recognize overlooked contributions and fill the spirits of followers with niche passions.
My colleague previously argued for a horror game category. That would be fantastic. So would tabletop games, representing a dedicated supporter's campaign. Yet I need to apologize in advance for pushing forward since similar to single-minded supporters, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: There should be a classification for brain-teasing titles.
Categorizing Game Types
Organizing artistic expressions defies precise measurement; it remains highly personal, and typically start arguments and end in fuzzy definitions. This explains why movie academies don’t do it. Yet it remains an unavoidable compromise for the industry of interactive entertainment, that demonstrate such variety it's challenging to consider them one unified medium.
For comprehensive acknowledgment of achievement in video games to be recognized, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, classification by type becomes crucial.
Current Gaming Award Categories
Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include award types recognizing Action, Adventure-action titles, RPG experiences, Combat games, Simulation and strategy titles, plus athletic and racing experiences. Collectively, these six categories effectively encompass a lot of ground, and you can find room for most games within them.
Different situation exists for puzzle games. There’s simply nowhere to put them. Consider three of recent excellent titles, all very different: the architectural riddles of one title, fast-paced pattern recognition from another release, and the sweetly sociological logic puzzles in another game. Which classification works among existing types? Nowhere, that’s where.
Acknowledgment Issues
There are dozens outstanding logic titles published annually that have no home in entertainment awards, if they accidentally match classification types such as Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, or the extremely competitive independent game categories.
- A renowned logic title wasn’t nominated in any category in 2014
- Another imaginative release was excluded during that ceremony
- A beloved organization game was overlooked in 2021
- Only a few puzzle games barely qualified for niche award types
Value of Brain-Teasers
Frequently they represent modest productions, but the art of the puzzle game holds tremendous importance. Well-known matching games count as most engaged experiences in the world maintaining this status for an extended period.
The famous puzzle experience challenges well-known building titles claiming status as most purchased experience; it also contends for top gaming experience. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, while interacting across multiple categories.
Recommendation and Reasoning
Brain-teasers wouldn't encounter such difficulty. It would be easy to populate multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — or rather, with difficulty, given the need to exclude many worthy titles.
To emphasize again, these are games without proper classification at major gaming awards. Logic title developers function at the challenging frontier interactive creation, developing some of the purest expressions of gaming itself. Comparable to movie stunt professionals, they deserve recognition. Don't make them wait generations.
